The Editorial board of the academic journal «Vìsnik Marìupolʹsʹkogo deržavnogo unìversitetu. Serìâ: Fìlologìâ» («Bulletin of Mariupol State University. Series: Philology») (hereinafter – Vìsnik)adheres to the ethical standards adopted by the international scientific community, the recommendations and standards of the Committee on Publications Ethics (CORE) (http://publicationethics.org/), Elsevier Publishers, International standards for editors and authors (http://publicationethics.org/resources/international-standards), as well as the Code of Ethics for a Scientist in Ukraine (http://znc.com.ua/eng/news/2009/20090123ethic.php).

The policy of the publication is based on obtaining and maintaining a modern scientific opinion of domestic and foreign scientists on the latest achievements and current problems of philology. While reviewing the scientific papers the Editorial Board is guided solely by their scientific novelty, theoretical value and practical contribution to the development of philological science, regardless of the author's position, academic rank, age, nationality, gender, religious and political views.

Principles of Editorial Policy:

- objectivity and impartiality in the selection of papers for publication;
- high demand for the quality of scientific research;
- mandatory confidential paper review;
- collegiality in decision-making regarding publication of papers;
- accessibility and efficiency in communication with authors;
- strict observance of copyright and related rights;
- strict adherence to the journal release schedule.

The Editorial Board conducts systematic work aimed at including the journal into international electronic libraries, catalogues and scientometric databases in order to join the world’s scientific information space, increase the impact factor of the journal and citation indexes of its authors.

The members of the Editorial Board strongly condemn any manifestations of plagiarism in the submitted papers as a violation of copyright and scientific ethics and take all possible measures to prevent it. It is important that ethical conduct is respected for all participants in the publication process: authors, editor, reviewers, founder and readers.


Ethical obligations of the Editorial Board

1. The Editorial Board is responsible for publishing, making fair and impartial decisions, ensuring a fair review process, and preventing the distribution of information related to the content of the manuscripts submitted for review to other persons, except those involved in the professional evaluation of the manuscripts.

2. All submissions to the Editorial Board must be unpublished and are subject to careful selection and review. The Editorial Board, led by the Editor-in-Chief, cross-checks the submitted data for accuracy, authenticity and scientific importance, makes impartial decisions independent of commercial or other interests and ensures a fair and objective review process.

3. All members of the Editorial Board are reviewers. The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject articles if they do not correspond to the subject matter of the publication, are not acceptable for publishing because of poor quality, or to return them to authors for revision in accordance with the reviewers’ comments. The Editorial Board reserves the right to transfer the manuscript for review to a third-party reviewer, a group of reviewers, as well as the right to remove an already published paper in case of violation of any rights or generally accepted norms of scientific ethics. The institution/organisation where the study was conducted and the author are informed of the paper removal. Prevention of unlawful publications is the responsibility of each participant in the publication process.

4. The review of all materials accepted for review is blind: the reviewer is not given the name of the author whose materials he/she is reviewing, and the author is not informed of the reviewer's information. However, if the reviewer has any objections to the content of the manuscript, doubts about the validity or accuracy of the particular data, the Editorial Board will allow the author to provide explanations or clarifications.

5. The Editorial Board ensures that materials not accepted for publication will not be used in the personal interests of the members of the Editorial Board without the written consent of the author.

6. The Editorial Board is open to cooperation and dialogue with all authors, reviewers, readers on issues of paper publication (including changes and corrections of published materials, publication of denials and/or apologies) and taking measures for restoration of violated rights.


Ethical obligations of reviewers

The review is carried out by highly qualified specialists with a scientific degree not lower than Ph.D., sufficient experience in the field of philology and publications in the relevant field. Expert evaluation should help the author improve the quality of his/her manuscript, and the Editor-in Chief and the Editorial Board to decide on the manuscript acceptance for publication. The reviewer carries out scientific examination of the copyrighted materials, so that his/her actions should be impartial and in compliance with the following principles:

1. Copyrighted material (manuscript) that has been accepted for peer review should be considered a confidential document that cannot be transmitted for review or discussion to third parties who do not have the authority of the Editorial Board. The reviewer is required to submit a manuscript review in a timely manner.

2. The reviewer is obliged to give an objective and reasoned assessment of the paper examination results. All comments provided by the reviewer must be substantiated and correct and may not affect the author’s identity. Criticising the author as a personality is unacceptable.

A reviewer who has doubts about his/her ability to provide quality, impartial and objective review of the author's manuscript (due to the lack of sufficient qualification to evaluate on the subject matter or possible conflict of interest with the author or institution, organisation, etc.), should notify the Editorial Board requesting to be excluded from the process of reviewing the manuscript. The manuscript is immediately returned to the Editorial Board.

5. The reviewer should draw the attention of the Editorial Board to any significant similarity between the manuscript submitted for evaluation and any other published paper, the incorrectness of textual borrowing or the absence of references to other authors.


Ethical obligations of authors

1. Copyrighted materials (manuscripts) submitted to the Editorial Board must be prepared in accordance with the established requirements. Information materials for authors on the publication issues, including the requirements for the paper layout, the procedure for sending them to the Editorial Board, etc., are available on the site of the Vìsnik in the relevant section.

2. The authors are obliged to comply with the legislation of Ukraine on protection of intellectual property rights, as well as the principles of scientific ethics. Criticism of other studies on the research topic should be expressed correctly and be well-grounded and in no case must be personal.

3. The authors ensure that the materials submitted to the Editorial Board have not previously been published and are not under consideration in other academic journals, and ensure that only those and all those researchers who have made a significant contribution to the paper preparation are included in the list of authors; the authors also ensure that all co-authors have agreed to the final version of the manuscript and its submission to the Editorial Board.

4. The authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the references, including self-references to the previous publications. In-text citations are designed in accordance with the established requirements. Plagiarism in any form is inadmissible.

5. Authors should assist the Editorial Board in preparing the materials for publication, in particular, promptly report all self-identified errors and inaccuracies, and provide explanations and confirmations as requested by the Editorial Board.

6. Authors should warn the Editorial Board of any real or potential conflict of interest that may affect the evaluation and/or interpretation of the manuscript. Authors should disclose sources of funding (government programmes, grants, competition projects, etc.) and other support for the manuscript, if any.

Other issues of publication ethics

1. The publication of materials is carried out in the order of their receipt.
2. The authors do not receive remuneration (fees) from the Editorial Board for publishing their papers in the Vìsnik.
3. Authors have the right to receive one free copy of the Bulletin for each published paper. If the paper has more than one author, the second and subsequent copies of the issue are reimbursed for their value.
4. The sources of funding for the publication are the author publishing charges.
5. Periodicity of the Vìsnik is twice per year.

Printed copies are sent within 3 months after online publishing.

A manuscript submitted after April 30 and October 31 is accepted for review and, if approved, is published in the next issue unless the author sends a request for manuscript withdrawal.
